The first successful use of tanks in combat was during 1917 in the battle of Cambrai when the allies used 476 tanks in 9 battalions to reinforce IV Corps ( about 4 divisions ) which helped them advance.

The first use of tanks in combat was 1916 during the battle of Somme where some 40 tanks concentrated together managed to advance about 2km into the German lines, but eventually this small number did not help the allies in holding that ground. And the more tank battalion you add to the division template, the more they get obsessed with those fantasies, crippling them even more.Īs far as I am aware there is no historical basis for this being the case in WW1 at all. There are lot of historical examples of that, that was the common use case in WW1 when tanks were scarce.Īnd if I understood correctly from this thread how everything works in HoI4 now, if those tanks are added to a division template, the infantry that was fighting just fine, suddenly suffer a serious penalty, they start dreaming of those beautiful monstrous machines that should allow them to win, and will start acting as if they have those already, instead of actually fighting properly. Even 3-5 tanks per division would be enough to enhance their efficiency greatly. In real life that could be a turning point - one side now has hardly-killable by other side's means siege machine which can get hundreds of kills before it is destroyed. And all of a sudden, one of those countries invents and begins producing tanks. Imagine a situation where two countries are at war with each other and they only have rifles, not ever an artillery. What I would do then is to copy my infantry template and add the tank to the copy + then convert only a few of my most experienced infantry divisions to the new template so that they can get the full benefit of the tanks. Tank divisions will be worse you add more battalions before having equipment to fill it since you ruin their speed, hardness and armor/piercing values.įor example if my Infantry would get 50 armor from adding a tank battalion at full strength then I see no real point in adding it if I only got 100 out of 2000 needed tanks since as a result my infantry get on average just 2.5 armor which can be pierced by pretty much all enemy divisions. I would probably still wait until I have at least 25-50% of the needed tanks though, so that I can see a bigger difference and be sure that it's worth it.Įdit: I thought you still were talking about infantry, the above is not valid for tanks. They won't be much worse, and as soon as they get some equipment they will start to get partial benefiting from the tank stats.
